- The aim of the study was to determine if salvaged blood collected post-operatively contains complement split products and pro-inflammatory mediators, and if there are any differences between hip and knee surgery.
- The study includes 58 patients undergoing hip or knee surgery, 38 of which required infusion of salvaged blood.
- The authors conclude that shed blood contains large concentrations of inflammatory mediators, and that there are no differences between blood collected after hip and knee surgery.
